This lesson follows the 5E model of instruction containing five phases of learning (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate). It provides a carefully planned sequence of instruction that places students at the center of learning. It encourages all students to explore, construct understanding of scientific concepts, and relate those understandings to phenomena or engineering problems.
During this 5th grade lesson, students will gain an understanding of renewable and
non-renewable energy sources. They will recognize the danger of burning fossil fuels
on our planet, and will invent their own means of producing renewable energy.
Students will integrate and exhibit learning by creating a ‘solar panel’, ‘wind turbine’,
and an alert that reliance on fossil fuels is decreasing.
